Have you spoken or studied English for many years but still sometimes have trouble being understood by native English speakers?
This class will begin with an overview of common problems non-native speakers have with English such as the sounds of “TH”, “Y and J”, “V and W”, “R and L”, and more. You will learn how to form these sounds by studying how to re-teach your mouth, tongue and teeth to form the correct sounds for common English words. Instructor Margaret Papetti will work with students to reinforce this by reciting poems, tongue twisters, and reading passages with targeted sounds.
For non-native English speakers at the intermediate and advanced levels.
Session 1
The first session will include a general overview of difficult sounds for non-native speakers of the English language. The instructor will spend time getting to know students’ language backgrounds and challenges with specific words and sounds. Students will learn how to properly position their teeth, tongue and mouth to form words and sounds that are a common stumbling block for them.
Session 2
The instructor will present poems and short readings for the students to listen to and practice out loud. Focus will be on vowel sounds which are problematic for many students.
Session 3
Instructor will have a detailed set of exercises tailored to aid with the specific problems of pronunciation for each student's first language.
